CHAPTER 27

Arriving at Carla’s apartment in mid-afternoon, Chris gathered her bags from the trunk and walked her to her door. While unlocking the door, she asked him to stay for a few minutes more. The remains of a troubling nightmare still lingered in the apartment, having him there helped her chase away any darkness that remained. Once inside her apartment, he placed her bags inside her bedroom and stared at her, wondering what was next.

As she glanced at him, his thoughts returned to the past few days he spent with the girl of his dreams, while she decompressed with her big brother, as she called him. Regardless of how each felt about their relationship, they would remember the past few days for a long time. In many ways, he hoped it would have been more than a family-like event, but she wasn’t ready.

On the other hand, she saw him in a whole different way. She realized more now than ever, if she were ever to get serious again with someone, she would want someone just like him, but not him. The friendship they had was too much of a risk, especially if they became romantically involved, and it didn’t work out.

Chris wanted to stay, but also knew he should leave. Noticing a confused expression crossing his face, she approached him and planted a brief thank-you kiss on his cheek. His face lit up and asked, “What was that for?”

“For being there for me the past few days and now, will you stay with me a little longer?”

He nodded, and they sat on her loveseat together, talking and laughing for hours. He fixed a late lunch, BLT sandwich with a fried egg. She noticed again how adept he was in the kitchen. A leisurely lunch eased any remaining fears left in her apartment. Cleaning up the table, he put the dishes in the dishwasher.

“I guess it’s time I leave, are you going to be okay?”

“Yeah, I’ll be fine. Thank you so much for being here for me. You know you’re an angel and a saint to me. You mean the world to me, bro.”

“Thanks, if you need me, let me know, okay?”

Nodding, she walked him to the door where there was an awkward moment of silence. Both were standing, looking at each as if they both didn’t want their time together to end. He grabbed the doorknob to open the door and was startled by her hand, grasping his arm. Turning around, she hugged him. Releasing her arms, she stood on her tiptoes, gently planting another soft kiss on his cheek. Looking deep in her eyes, he had other thoughts and knew this wasn’t the right time to make a move. She was still vulnerable, and he would not take advantage of her under any circumstance.

He left with thoughts of what could have been, while she went about her day; however, she couldn’t get him off her mind. Deep inside her soul, something told her not to let him go. Life was too short not to experience his love and devotion for her.
